Internet By Vikas R. Srivastava / April 8, 2015 Share Tweet Pin Share After the US, it’s India’s turn to fight for Net Neutrality, Yes just about a month ago, US got its Net Neutrality rules approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). First of All to know What The Net Neutrality is ? Net Neutrality is the principle that all online traffic should be treated equally. It means that Internet service providers(ISP) and governments should provide us with open internet, or free internet, or open network — and should not block or discriminate against any applications, site, platform, or content that ride over those networks. Just as your phone company shouldn’t decide who you can call and what you say on that call, your ISP shouldn’t be concerned with the content you view or post online. Why you should Care of Net Neutrality in India ? Until now, you and I could use the internet data we paid for, to do anything on the internet. If telecom companies get their way, they will control either how much you access, what you access, how fast you access and how much you pay to access content and services on the Internet. It means if you have Internet data of 4 Mbps, you could not be able to use your full speed data everywhere, data speed may vary according to application or content you browse. Say your 4Mbps data speed may slow down to 128 Kbps for some applications like WhatsApp, or Google Hangout, or Skype. Or probably you will be forced to recharge 1 GB data for Rs 251 + Rs 50 for WhatsApp + Rs 30 for Facebook and so on like TV packages This is so horrible, and this could happen very soon if you don’t fight your bite. In simple word ISPs in India want to regulate you to pay them extra money for the Applications they don’t like or those which compete with them like WhatsApp and Skype. I think you should aware of the fact that during this time, telecom companies have largely focused on selling voice minutes – while at the back-end they have been using voice over internet protocol (or VOIP) to connect with other telcos and deliver calls using the internet. And given that the cost of VOIP is a tiny fraction of the cost of traditional voice calls they were charging. But, now thanks to the Apps like of WhatsApp and Skype and Google Hangouts, consumers can get the same voice calls delivered at internet prices, direct to their handsets. And this has made them scared so they are forcing government to ruin Net Neutrality principle in India. What you should do to Save the Internet in India ? Please raise your voice, Certainly you can make a difference !! In India Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) is the only body which has the power to settle this issue once and for all. TRAI has issued a 118-page long consultation paper[PDF] on the regulatory framework of over-the-top services (OTTS) like search engines, video platforms and social networks on March 27. As a part of the consultation process, you have been asked 20 questions that are based on the below two points : Should OTTS be licensed? If yes, how? Under current rules or new ones. Should we leave net neutrality undecided and let the market in future decide its fate? To save Internet in India follow any one of the below options : Easiest & Recommended:- Visit www.savetheinternet.in and click “Send your response” button. (If you prefer, have a look at all those 20 questions and answers also you can edit your answer too- by clicking “Edit answers” button) Or Visit Netneutrality.in,which will tell you how to lobby the prime minister. Or you can respond to TRAI yourself by emailing at [email protected] Or go to change.org petition and sign up to save Internet So go fight your bite, please do it quick by following any of the above in large numbers, tweeting about net neutrality and sending mails to TRAI before April 24th.
