News Labs aims to involve reporters to better leverage Google products in their work. It feature reporters to identify the best practices for newsrooms using apps like Maps, Search, YouTube, and Trends to better track stories in real-time, tell stories using data, and distribute them on Google channels.

Mr. Grove writes in a bog post that we’ve created the News Lab, a new effort at Google to empower innovation at the intersection of technology and media. Our mission is to collaborate with journalists and entrepreneurs to help build the future of media. And we’re tackling this in three ways: though ensuring our tools are made available to journalists around the world (and that newsrooms know how to use them); by getting helpful Google data sets in the hands of journalists everywhere; and through programs designed to build on some of the biggest opportunities that exist in the media industry today.

Google via News Labs hopes to accomplish these journalists goal in three distinct ways:

  • Easy access to the tools journalists need for better reporting
  • Providing Google data to journalists everywhere for more insightful storytelling, and
  • By Launching programs to take advantage of the opportunities that exist in today’s media industry
